Earth, Moon and Sun

Explore the relationship between Earth, Moon and Sun

This planetarium show explores the relationship between Earth, Moon and Sun with the help of Coyote, an animated character who has many misconceptions about our home planet and its most familiar neighbors. His confusion about the universe makes viewers think about how Earth, Moon and Sun work together as a system and learn to distinguish between stories and science.

Learn the basics of fusion and solar energy and why the Sun rises and sets. Examine the Moon’s orbit, craters, phases, and eclipses. You’ll even take a look at past and future space travel to our Moon … and beyond!

Students in grades two through five will especially enjoy this look at the Earth-Moon-Sun system, though audiences of all ages can appreciate learning the science behind the stories.

A past version of this planetarium show featured an Indigenous legend about how the Sun came to be in the sky, followed by an explanation of how science provides evidence to support “truths instead of myths.” We have removed that portion of the show from Earth, Moon and Sun. Why did we do this?

We produced this show more than 15 years ago. Today, we understand that Indigenous stories are scientific; they represent the intricate knowledge of peoples who have lived in complement to the natural world for millennia. Their stories should not be presented as less than currently accepted scientific theories, but as being in harmony with what we know as science. The downside of this deletion is that it removes all references to Indigenous knowledge, but we did not want to continue perpetuating harm with the way the show was written. Thank you for your understanding as we learn and grow together.
