Parking for Morehead visitors is available in several area parking lots and on Franklin Street in downtown Chapel Hill.

The closest parking lot is directly in front of the Morehead Building and is operated by UNC as a campuswide parking lot. This UNC lot is gated and offers 40 public spaces, in addition to annual permit spaces. During normal operations, a parking attendant is on duty during these hours:

  • Monday-Friday: 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

Fees apply for each hour of parking during these hours ($1.75 per hour) and can be paid by cash or credit card. Overnight parking is not permitted in this UNC lot.

Parking on Saturdays and Sundays are free, unless the lot is reserved by UNC Chapel Hill for special events.

UNC reserves spaces in this lot for events and spaces are not always available. Please allow adequate time to find alternate parking if this lot is not available. Questions concerning this parking lot can be directed to the UNC Department of Public Safety at 919-962-3951.

Fall 2021 Football

The parking lot in front of the planetarium is reserved by the University on fall Saturdays when home football games are scheduled (see the schedule here). Parking is not available on these days starting 2 hours prior to the start of the game, and you should plan to park elsewhere if visiting during the game or in the 2 hours prior to the game.

Alternative parking on gamedays is available on Franklin Street or in the Wallace Parking deck (150 E Rosemary St, Chapel Hill, NC 27514). Town parking rates are at minimum $1/hr and may not include tax or additional fees. Click here to learn more about town parking in Chapel Hill.

PARKING FOR CARS AND VANS

In addition to the UNC lot directly in front of the Morehead Building, visitors can find metered spaces on Franklin Street (free on Sunday and after 6 p.m. on weekdays) and public parking decks on Rosemary Street (fees vary by lot). After business hours and on weekends, other parking lots on the UNC campus may have spaces available.

PARKING FOR BUSES

Small buses may be able to park in the UNC lot, if space permits.

Standard buses are not permitted to park in the UNC lot but may use this lot to drop off and pick up passengers. Bus drivers should pull into the lot, drive to the front of the Morehead Building and let passengers off the bus. All group members should remain on the sidewalk in front of the building while one adult goes into the gift shop for check-in. Buses may use off-site parking at the Dean Dome. If needed, Morehead will provide shuttle service so that bus drivers can be with their groups during on-site activities.

Bus drivers should return to pick up the group at a time designated by the group leader. Planetarium staff can help group leaders determine the approximate time. It is helpful if bus drivers have access to cell phones.

Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is a unit of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). UNC provides downloadable maps in PDF format to help visitors locate accessibility features on the UNC campus:

Morehead welcomes requests from guests with special needs and/or requests for accommodations. Please view our Policy on Non-Discrimination online for reference.

Do you need to make an accommodation request? Please contact our Guest Relations team at 919.962.1236 at least 15 minutes before your scheduled program.

PARKING

Spaces are designated directly in front of Morehead Planetarium and Science Center to provide parking for persons with disabilities. Curb cuts provide access to sidewalks, which are primarily brick throughout the UNC campus.

The parking lot at Morehead is operated by UNC and served by a gate attendant during business hours.

ENTRANCES

Morehead’s primary entrance is on the west side of the building where a grand staircase and large banners are located.

  • Faces the University – please not that the entrance is no longer facing the parking lot.
  • Provides ramp, hand rails, push-button door entry, and easy access to accessible bathrooms and an elevator
