Director

Todd Boyette

A lifelong educator, Boyette is just the fifth director in Morehead’s history. During his time at Morehead, Boyette has expanded outreach programming, spearheaded the transition from analog to digital fulldome planetarium technology and launched the North Carolina Science Festival. He also currently serves as president of the Association of Science Museum Directors and is a member of UNC School of Education's clinical faculty. Prior to becoming Morehead director in 2006, he was president of the North Carolina Grassroots Science Museums Collaborative, president and CEO of The Health Adventure in Asheville and director of Wilson’s Imagination Station. Boyette holds a doctoral degree in science education from North Carolina State University. He also holds a master's degree in science education and bachelor's degrees in science education and in chemistry. He is a former high school chemistry teacher.

Director of Business Operations

Susan Durham

Durham is responsible for Morehead’s finances, human resources, information technology, building and retail operations. She began at UNC-Chapel Hill in the anesthesiology department in 2000 as finance/administration manager before moving to the Institute for Science Learning. She joined the Morehead team in 2006. Durham holds an MBA from the University of Washington and a bachelor's degree in finance from Belmont University.

Director of Programs and Strategic Initiatives

Crystal Harden

Harden oversees program initiatives for Morehead, including Morehead's mobile labs, mobile planetarium, enrichment visits, Science in the Summer, STEMville, the North Carolina Science Festival and onsite programming. She is also leading Morehead’s diversity initiative. Prior to joining Morehead in 2008, she served as the education programs consultant for the California Department of Education. Harden holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from North Carolina Central University and a master’s degree in teaching from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also pursuing a doctorate in education at UNC-Chapel Hill. She has served as an expert on mobile programs in science education for the US Department of State in Amman, Jordan. In 2013, Harden was awarded the Outstanding Informal Educator Award from the North Carolina Science, Math and Technology Center.

Director of Creative and Experiential Design

Jay Heinz

Heinz leads fulldome planetarium show production, digital media, exhibits and the on-site experience. While at Morehead, he has also taught video and multimedia courses and helped lead overseas documentary projects with the UNC School of Media and Journalism. Prior to joining Morehead in 2007, Heinz worked at the Computer Museum, Lucasfilm and the Washington Post. He has a bachelor’s degree in computer science and film from Boston College and a master’s degree from UNC’s School of Media and Journalism.
