  • Useful Science Podcast and Morehead announce a new collaboration

January 3, 2020

Useful Science and the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center have announced a new collaboration on the Useful Science Podcast. The Useful Science Podcast is a science podcast that discusses and translates scientific findings into useful tips for a broad audience.

The podcast has been running since 2015 and has received more than 1 million downloads and 112 iTunes reviews averaging 4.8/5 stars. It has been recommended by PlayerFM and Podcast Planet. The podcast is just one division of the Useful Science organization (usefulscience.org), which author Malcolm Gladwell has called “genius.” Morehead will be supporting the Useful Science Podcast by providing editorial support from its base at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Morehead’s support means that the Useful Science Podcast can continue providing high quality content that explains important concepts to a broad audience of scientists and non-scientists. Recent podcast episodes have communicated studies about the science of pets, smartphones, and pop music. Future episodes will delve into the health and environmental implications of white vs. red meat, and healthy office habits.

Useful Science Morehead collaboration

“This collaboration means that the Useful Science Podcast can produce episodes at a faster pace,” said Cameron Spencer, the podcast’s founder and co-host. “Most of our podcast’s contributors are scientists, which means they have busy schedules. Morehead’s help means that we can support them while continuing to create content.”

Dr. Maryse Thomas, Director of Useful Science, also communicated her excitement about the podcast. “This is an ideal marriage of Useful Science’s accessible content and Morehead’s impressive resources and innovative team,” said Dr. Thomas. “This may eventually lead to different forms of content and coverage, as well as a broader audience for our podcast.”

The collaboration also helps Morehead reach an audience outside of Chapel Hill, with Useful Science Listeners spanning over 50 nations. “Morehead is always looking for novel ways to connect scientists to the public,” said Jonathan Frederick, a member of Morehead who directs the North Carolina Science Festival. “The Useful Science Podcast has been producing outstanding science communication content, and we couldn’t be more excited to work with the podcast’s team.”

The first Morehead-sponsored Useful Science episode will air on January 10th.

The Useful Science Podcast can be found at https://www.usefulscience.org/podcast, as well as on traditional podcast streaming platforms such as Spotify and iTunes. The podcast is managed by Joshua Conrad Jackson and the podcast’s head editor is Steve Mow.
