The end of the second week – presentations and cardboard boats!

Aug 8 2008 - 2:37pm

BY CARLY APPLE

Sadly, the end of this week of SciVentures has come. But check out all the blog posts by those science teams! And the campers did a great job building their cardboard boats and setting sail (even if some of them didn’t quite make it back…)

Today was extra exciting as we took apart out weir. Check out the water level upstream from that thing!

Thanks for a great week, campers!

Week 2, Day 2 – Water Filtering pictures!

Aug 6 2008 - 2:39pm

BY CARLY APPLE

Today we tested out some of the filtering strategies that we learned about OWASA. We made a mixture of many things that we might put down our sinks (that probably shouldn’t go there), and then tried to purify it. I’m not sure I’d want to drink any of the results, though…. OWASA is a bit better than we are!

Today we took a trip to OWASA’s Water Treatment Plant and Wastewater Treatment Plant.  Here is a picture of some campers during this amazing opportunity.  Thanks, OWASA!!

Perseid Meteor Shower

Aug 5 2008 - 2:30pm

BY MICKEY JO SORRELL

MPSC will not be holding a skywatching session for the Perseid shower this year since moonlight will interfere during our usual session hours.Good times to see the Perseids this year will be between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Tuesday, August 12th and the mornings immediately before and after.

You are likely to see the highest number of meteors between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. on the 12th. Depending on how dark your skies are, you may see up to 75 meteors per hour.

Breakfast of Champions…or something

What fuels our Morehead animators? Coffee? Jolt? Taser shots to the head? Nope. Turns out it’s lettuce. Iceberg lettuce, to be exact. That’s what Jim brought in for lunch today. That’s it. Just lettuce. This is a troubling sign. I give him until Friday until he’s collapsing on the floor and seeing rainbow animals dancing around the room. Maybe this is how they came up with Fantasia over at Disney…

one zillion degrees and counting …

Okay, the temperature in North Carolina is really not THAT hot. But it feels like that!

Naked Coyote

Jul 22 2008 - 2:53pm

BY JAY HEINZ

I know what you’re thinking, “uhhhh, aren’t coyotes normally naked, Jay? Duh.” Yeah, yeah, yeah. You’re freakin’ hilarious. But check this out. For those of you new to the fabulous world of 3D animation, this is what we call a wire frame. This wire frame is of the coyote in front of a chalkboard – the same as you can see in the previous blog post.
