Why Support Us

Every gift to Morehead Planetarium and Science Center matters. Your gift matters. Although state support and ticket revenues cover most daily operations, Morehead is a vibrant, dynamic organization because of private giving from donors like you.

You’re doing great things through your giving to Morehead. You create exciting new shows and exhibits for our guests. You underwrite field trips to Morehead for children from schools that otherwise would not be able to afford to visit. You produce the North Carolina Science Festival. You allow university students to work and learn at Morehead – giving them important skills for the job market. And perhaps most importantly, you bring science to life for all of the people Morehead serves year-round through your philanthropy.

If you are looking for the technical reasons, here they are:

  • Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permissible by law. Morehead is a constituent unit of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a 501(c)(3) organization. Our federal tax ID is: 566001393.
  • We have audited financials. As part of the University, our official financials are those of the university. Visit the university’s finance division website to see the latest report.
  • Our annual report gives you information about what we are doing and who our donors are. This will give you more information about Morehead. See our most recent annual report.
  • We follow the principles of the Donor Bill of Rights. We strive to ensure that all donors and prospective donors can have confidence in our integrity. Download a PDF copy of the Donor Bill of Rights.

A note regarding Morehead’s 990 forms: we don’t have any. Here’s why: Morehead is a constituent unit of UNC-Chapel Hill, which is in turn part of state government. The IRS has determined that governmental entities (that’s us) are not required to file 990s.
