Sensory-Friendly Science: Autism Awareness Evening

Sensory Friendly Science

For families and visitors requiring special accommodations, Morehead will be hosting a Sensory Friendly evening on Friday, April 12 from 6-8 p.m. There will be activities that engage the senses throughout the evening. Some activities include an accessible show in the GSK Full Dome Theater catered towards the needs of the audience. Other activities include a hands-on sensory experiment working with “oobleck” slime based on Dr. Seuss’ book Bartholomew and the oobleck. You will also be able to experience the wonders of the Science Stage, one aspect will include learning about liquid nitrogen through demonstrations.

This will be a fun family based event that encourages children with sensory sensitivities to feel comfortable learning in a non-traditional educational setting. We will have support staff trained by UNC TEACCH to help this event run smoothly and ensure a great experience for all.

We know that transition periods can be difficult so we have allowed ample time to change activities. We will also have staff stationed throughout Morehead to help you and your family navigate.

Cool Down Areas and Kits

The green classroom outlined on the walkthrough map will be designated as a quiet area with cool down kits and coloring if needed. This space will have calming, quiet activities for when a break is needed. There will be bean bags and cool down kits to ensure a comfortable space. Please ask a staff member if you need any assistance. Each kit offers relaxation toys that focus the senses, calm cards that provide relaxation strategies such as deep breathing and count down cards.
