Students in a Discovery Class.

Discovery Classes are hands-on, minds-on learning experiences designed specifically for school groups visiting Morehead. These interactive classes add an exciting dimension to any school visit.

Programs Offered

Round and Round We Go

Get ready to move as we explore the relationship between Earth, Moon and Sun in this highly interactive and kinesthetic class. Why does the Moon’s shape seem to change? Why do we have day and night? What causes eclipses? We’ll answer these questions and more as we “dance the night away.”

Family Science Day - Catapult Challenge

Parents and kids, come investigate your world during a Family Science Day. On Family Science Days, we offer our regularly schedule programming but add a special program around one topic. This time it is "Catapults." Are you ready to build your very own mini-catapult? In this family workshop, you’ll work together on an engineering challenge as we explore how to harness elastic potential energy to launch projectiles! Each participant will get their own catapult. Recommended for ages 7 and up.

Hidden No More: STEM Women of Color Tour

Historically, women of color have faced considerable challenges pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. "Hidden No More: STEM Women of Color" tour lets you hear from five women who, despite these challenges, have made significant contributions to their fields and are pushing society forward.

Since 2005, the North Carolina LEGO Users Group has put on LEGO-palooza at Morehead Planetarium & Science center. Intricate LEGO exhibits are displayed throughout the building for a weekend -- scenes of outer space, trains, amusement parks, city landmarks and more! There is something for everyone to enjoy. LEGO-palooza will also have LEGO activities for kids to explore their own creativity and innovation, food trucks, and more.

General Info

Sensory Friendly Science

For families and visitors requiring special accommodations, Morehead will be hosting a Sensory Friendly evening on Friday, April 12 from 6-8 p.m. There will be activities that engage the senses throughout the evening. Some activities include an accessible show in the GSK Full Dome Theater catered towards the needs of the audience. Other activities include a hands-on sensory experiment working with “oobleck” slime based on Dr. Seuss’ book Bartholomew and the oobleck. You will also be able to experience the wonders of the Science Stage, one aspect will include learning about liquid nitrogen through demonstrations.

This will be a fun family based event that encourages children with sensory sensitivities to feel comfortable learning in a non-traditional educational setting. We will have support staff trained by UNC TEACCH to help this event run smoothly and ensure a great experience for all.

Carolina Skies: Special Editions in the planetarium.

Throughout the year Morehead offers special editions of the popular Carolina Skies planetarium program. These are "live" star shows led by a Morehead educator. Come learn about celestial objects, myths and legends or current astronomical events of interest.
