We love it when you come to visit us, but we believe that science centers should actively engage in outreach to the communities they serve. That's why Morehead creates programs that we can take into the communities where you live, work and play.
From time-to-time, we participate in festivals and other one-time events, but we have several major community engagement programs that operate on an ongoing basis:
- Skywatching sessions are offered multiple times each year. These sessions are often at Jordan Lake State Park. They are also held at other sites in the Triangle area occasionally.
- Science in the Summer is a summer enrichment program for elementary and middle school students. One-week sessions and three-day sessions are offered in nine counties in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. We operate this program in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline.
- The North Carolina Science Festival is a series of events held across North Carolina each spring. Morehead founded the festival and continues to produce it with the assistance of hundreds of event partners.
- STEMville is an educational community outreach program developed by Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. Most STEMville events are designed for children in elementary school or middle school. High school students may participate as activity leaders.
