DESCRIPTION:Do you like scavenger hunts? How can you tell if creek water is clean and healthy. Join environmental educators and researchers Heather Holley and Sammy Bauer for a walk through the science of looking for certain kinds of stream bugs (aquatic macroinvertebrates) that need clean\, unpolluted water to survive. What will you find as you dig through real-world data in local creeks and streams. \n\n\n\nAbout our speakers: \n\n\n\nSammy Bauer (she/they) is an environmental educator and professional science communicator. She spends the bulk of her time teaching folks how to protect local waterways from pollution. Prior to pivoting into non-formal education\, Sammy taught 6th grade Language Arts and Social Studies in Warren County\, North Carolina. Sammy has a bachelor’s degree in communications and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. If you ask her about creek critters\, rock climbing\, or hotdog toppings\, she will get very excited. \n\n\n\nHeather Holley is an avid outdoors and nature lover with over 25 years in environmental and arboricultural experience in the private and public sectors. She has served as a Trail Crew Leader\, Arboricultural Genetic Researcher\, City Arborist\, and Engineering/Stormwater Professional. Heather currently is the Stormwater Specialist for the Town of Carrboro Stormwater Division and has work for the City of Charleston\, SC and the City of Doral\, Fl. She studied Environmental Science at NC State University. Fox is a graduate student in the Clinical Psychology PhD program at UNC Chapel Hill\, working with Dr. Mitch Prinstein. She graduated from Duke University with a B.A. in psychology and visual media studies. Subsequently\, as a research assistant at Alpert Medical School of Brown University\, she worked on several studies examining mental health and treatment access among youth in the juvenile justice system. She is interested in the role of digital social norms and processes in development and health among adolescents and young adults. In addition to research\, Kara loves teaching\, working with children and families\, and writing. In her free time\, Kara enjoys knitting and crocheting\, reading\, and playing with her dog Laika. \n\n\n\nMaria T Maza is a graduate student in the Developmental Psychology program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received her B.S. in Neuroscience and Education from Bates College in 2018. Following graduation\, she worked as a research assistant and imaging coordinator with Dr. BJ Casey at Yale University. Her research aims to explore the impact of biosocial factors and technology on the developing brain and subsequent health risk behaviors. SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe: From the Rainforest to the UN: How Science Informs Climate Change Policy
DESCRIPTION:Professor Angel Hsu found herself in the lowland jungles of Costa Rica while studying abroad the summer after her freshman year at Wake Forest University\, experiencing the beauty of glass tree frogs and sound of howler monkeys\, but wondering\, “What good is the science I’m discovering\, if global warming and deforestation eventually lead to the demise of the rain forest?” This question motivated her to study climate change policy when she returned to the classroom. In this interactive talk\, Prof. Hsu will talk about how science informs policy\, drawing on her experience at the frontlines of international climate change policy. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: Angel Hsu is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy and the Environment\, Ecology and Energy Program at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She is the Founder and Principal Investigator of Data-Driven EnviroLab\, an interdisciplinary group that uses emerging technologies and data-driven approaches to solve problems related to climate change policy. Angel previously held appointments at Yale-NUS college in Singapore as Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies and was also the lead author of the 2018 UNEP Emissions Gap report chapter on non-state actors and an author for the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report. Angel holds a PhD in Forestry and Environmental Studies from Yale University\, an M Phil in Environmental Policy from the University of Cambridge\, and a BS in Biology and BA in Political Science from Wake Forest University.

SUMMARY:UNC Research Spotlight with Tamlin Pavelsky: The NASA SWOT Mission
DESCRIPTION:NASA’s Surface Water and Ocean Topography Satellite: A New Eye in the Sky for Earth’s Water\n\n\n\nWater is perhaps the single most important resource for humans and naturals systems. In the form of floods\, it also drives the most destructive category of natural disasters worldwide. Despite its clear importance\, there is a huge amount we do not know about where our water is and how it is changing. In this public talk\, Dr. Tamlin Pavelsky will tell us about how NASA and collaborators around the world have developed a new satellite\, the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission\, that will give us an unprecedented global picture of the world’s river flow\, lake water storage\, and ocean circulation. SWOT is scheduled to launch this December\, representing the culmination of more than 15 years of work by scientists and engineers. We will explore both the cutting-edge science that SWOT will accomplish and the long process that led to the development of this $1B satellite. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Tamlin Pavelsky is a professor of global hydrology in the Department of Earth\, Marine and Environmental Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned his PhD in geography from UCLA in 2008. His dissertation focused on using remote sensing\, field measurements\, and large datasets to understand how the water cycle in northern environments varies in space and time. In 2009\, Dr. Pavelsky was hired as an assistant professor at UNC. His teaching has focused on remote sensing\, water resources\, and hydrology\, while his research has focused on understanding the global distribution of water in rivers\, lakes\, and mountain snowpack using satellite imagery\, field measurements\, and regional climate models. Since 2013\, Dr. Pavelsky has served as the hydrology science lead for the NASA Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission. For his work leading the surface water community towards solutions for measuring river flow from space\, Dr. Pavelsky was awarded a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers\, the highest award given by the U.S. government to early career researchers. SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe | Back to the Geosphere: Impacts of CO2 Sequestration Underground
DESCRIPTION:Geological carbon sequestration involves capturing atmospheric CO2\, condensing it into liquid form\, and pumping it into deep underground aquifers.  Scientists have been exploring the environmental impacts of carbon sequestration\, including changes to groundwater geochemistry\, subsurface microbial community composition\, and the potential for fracturing and escape of CO2 back into the atmosphere.  I’ll give an overview of these impacts and share data illustrating the impact of high CO2 concentrations on subsurface microbial communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Megan Plenge is a Teaching Associate Professor in the Department of Earth\, Marine and Environmental Sciences at UNC-Chapel Hill.  Her dissertation research focused on microbial controls on water chemistry. She is currently involved with the National Association of Geoscience Teacher (NAGT) as the North Carolina representative to the South East section\, and as a program chair for their national conference\, the Earth Educator Rendezvous.

DESCRIPTION:OUR VANISHING NIGHT   \n\n\n\nFor generations\, everyone experienced the breathtaking beauty of an unspoiled night sky\, with views into our universe of thousands of stars and the Milky Way. In this program\, you’ll discover how light pollution affects our view of the night sky\, find out how to participate in a worldwide citizen-science campaign to document light pollution\, and try your hand at designing better streetlights that put light only where it’s needed. Under the planetarium dome\, you’ll experience a stunning night sky studded with stars\, just as our ancestors did—and as we could too\, if we reduced light pollution. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Amy Sayle\, PhD\, communicates astronomy to the public and tells stories about the stars under the Morehead Planetarium sky\, at skywatching events\, on night paddles at Jordan Lake\, and under dark skies at Bryce Canyon National Park’s annual astronomy festival. She is a founder and coordinator of the North Carolina Science Festival’s annual Statewide Star Party\, which features dozens of skywatching events from the NC mountains to the coast on the same weekend in April.    \n\n\n\nAbout Teen Science Cafe: Teen Science Cafe is a monthly event\, inviting teens to talk directly with scientists about their work. Designed specifically for ages 13-18\, we invite guests to ask questions and participate in interesting discussions. DESCRIPTION:Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is delighted to host Katie Mack\, PhD\, and STEM leaders Joan D. Barber\, PhD\, Christina Hammock Koch\, and Christy L. Shaffer\, PhD\, for a celebration of women in STEM as part of the 2022 North Carolina Science Festival. \n\n\n\nKatie Mack\, PhD\, will deliver a keynote address describing her career story\, then join guest panelists for a discussion of their professional journeys moderated by Crystal Harden\, EdD. \n\n\n\nRegister here for tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKatie Mack\, PhD\, is a theoretical astrophysicist who studies a range of questions in cosmology\, the study of the universe from beginning to end. She currently holds the position of Assistant Professor of Physics at North Carolina State University\, where she is also a member of the Leadership in Public Science Cluster. Starting in June 2022\, she will be the Hawking Chair in Cosmology and Science Communication at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. Throughout her career she has researched dark matter\, the early universe\, galaxy formation\, black holes\, cosmic strings\, and the ultimate fate of the cosmos. Alongside her academic work\, she is an active science communicator. You can find her on Twitter as @AstroKatie. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelists \n\n\n\nJoan D. Barber\, PhD\, retired as Vice Chancellor for Student Life from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in 2014\, having served 28 years at the school. She holds a doctorate in zoology/renal physiology from Howard University and completed her postdoctoral training in the Department of Nephrology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, where she was the first Black postdoctoral fellow in the UNC School of Medicine. Her work contributed to the treatment of diseases of the kidney and kidney transplantation. In addition to research and teaching\, she is an advocate for underrepresented minority students’ access to STEM-related fields and has built programs – both within and outside NCSSM – to enhance opportunities for students in STEM. \n\n\n\nChristina Hammock Koch is a NASA astronaut and served as flight engineer on the International Space Station from March 2019 to February 2020\, setting a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman with a total of 328 days in space\, during which she conducted six spacewalks\, including the first three all-women spacewalks. She graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and holds bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering and physics and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University. She serves on the NCSSM Board of Trustees. \n\n\n\nChristy L. Shaffer\, PhD\, is a general partner at Hatteras Venture Partners with 30 years of experience in the life science industry. She joined Hatteras following a career as a clinical scientist\, international project leader\, Associate Director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Burroughs Wellcome Co.\, and President/CEO of Inspire Pharmaceuticals. She holds a doctorate in pharmacology from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and completed her postdoctoral training at the Chicago Medical School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has served on numerous nonprofit boards\, including as chair of the NCSSM Foundation Board of Directors and Morehead Planetarium and Science Center Advisory Board. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModerator \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCrystal Harden\, EdD\, supervises inclusion\, equity\, and diversity initiatives as well as community engagement\, youth + family\, and school + interpretative programming for Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. Her career in science education has spanned 30 years with work in state government administration\, K-12 school teaching\, and informal science center leadership. NC Governor Roy Cooper recently recognized her as a 2022 African American STEM Leader. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is part of UNC Universe Week\, a week-long celebration of the science and scientists from UNC-Chapel Hill. SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe: Epidemiology\, Global Health\, and HIV
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with doctoral students Cyrus Sinai (Health Geography) and Griffin Bell (Infectious Disease Epidemiology) will provide an overview of the field of epidemiology within the context of global public health. Participants will learn about the epidemiologic perspective\, especially as it pertains to HIV/AIDS\, a disease which has arguably been the greatest public health challenge of the last century. The presenters will also provide personal anecdotes and lessons learned from their time in the field.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\n\n\nGriffin Bell | Griffin Bell is a PhD student\, infectious disease epidemiologist\, and biostatistician at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He predominately studies malaria and HIV\, and frequently uses geographical methods in order to map spatial disease distributions and describe disease ecology. Griffin’s work is based in sub-Saharan Africa\, especially in Malawi\, however\, he also has major projects in Gabon\, Ghana\, and South Africa. \n\n\n\nCyrus Sinai | Cyrus Sinai is a PhD student at UNC Chapel Hill studying health and medical geography. He is interested in finding ways to improve disease surveillance in remote\, resource-limited settings in sub-Saharan Africa\, and using GIS / mapping techniques to help guide public health interventions. Before coming to UNC\, Cyrus worked in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for three years mapping remote villages for the Ministry of Health. \n\n\n\n Please note that this event is FREE but registration is required.

In this Teen Science Cafe\, we will explore the cells responsible for electrical activity in the heart\, cardiac pacemaking cells\, and what characteristics these cells need to function.  \n\n\n\n About the speaker: Kandace Thomas is a 5th year Genetic and Molecular Biology PhD student\, at the University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill. In addition to her studies\, Kandace is a published author and entrepreneur; she aspires to be an undergraduate Biology professor after she graduates in Fall 2021.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this Teen Science Cafe with Jeromy Rech; we will discuss creating new types of plastics including those that can conduct electricity and be used in solar panels. We will also have a virtual lab tour to see where some of this chemistry is done. Finally\, we’ll look at some applications of these plastics including flexible solar panels\, foldable smart phones\, solar powered greenhouses\, and more!  \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker: Jeromy is currently a fifth-year chemistry graduate student in Wei You’s lab at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a polymer chemist\, he designs new types of plastics which are used to make semi-transparent and flexible solar panels. Outside of the lab\, Jeromy is also a chemistry professor at Durham Technical Community College and a robotics referee for FIRST Robotics. \n\n\n\n*Please Note: This event is free but pre-registration is required.

She will explain how STEM Innovation for Inclusion in Early Education Center (STEMIE) are planning to teach foundational computational thinking concepts to very young children with differing abilities by sharing a working draft they are developing focused on a series of activities for young children with “blocks and codes.”  \n\n\n\nAbout Jessica: Jessica Amsbary is a postdoctoral research scholar at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She is currently working on a project focused on engaging all young children\, early childhood professionals\, and families in STEM learning experiences. She specifically is working with some of her team members on adapting simple coding and computational thinking activities for young children with differing abilities.
