SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe | Water Quality
DESCRIPTION:Protecting underserved populations from lead and toxic metals in drinking-water.\n\n\n\nPlease join us at Morehead Planetarium on Friday\, January 19th for a very exciting Teen Science Cafe! For this month we will be joined by Dr. Michael Fisher from the UNC Water Institute to dive into the topic of water quality and community science. \n\n\n\nThe western doors up the big stairs will open at 5:30 for pizza and conversation. The cafe will start at 6:00 and wrap up around 7:00. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLead is a potent neurotoxin that harms human health with disproportionate impacts on infants\, developing fetuses\, and vulnerable populations. As lead in gasoline\, paint\, and food has been progressively brought under greater control in recent decades\, water remains an increasingly important exposure route. \n\n\n\nThis route is particularly important in private wells in the US\, as well as in a variety of water system types in many low- and middle-income country settings worldwide. Recent work by researchers at UNC and their collaborators seeks to generate evidence to inform progress on lead-free drinking water in the US and worldwide\, in alignment with 2030 sustainable development goals. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet Our Speaker\n\n\n\nDr. Fisher develops\, evaluates\, and applies technologies and methods for addressing under-recognized health concerns in water and sanitation\, both in the US and internationally. This work focuses on three areas: 1) monitoring and evaluation of water and sanitation processes\, infrastructure\, and service delivery; 2) improving water and wastewater treatment; and 3) applications of implementation science and quality improvement methods to improving the performance of water and sanitation systems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram Schedule\n\n\n\n5:30 pm – Arrive and check in. We will gather inside the west\, main entrance of Morehead. \n\n\n\n5:30 pm – 6:00 pm: Pizza social. Pizza social will take place in our classrooms\, located on the 2nd floor. \n\n\n\n6:00 pm – 7:00 pm: Discussion & activities. Presentations will take place at the Science Stage located on the 1st floor. \n\n\n\n*Please Note: Depending on scheduled activities\, the program may end between 7:00 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.

SUMMARY:Genetics & Microbiology | December Teen Science Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at Morehead Planetarium on Friday\, December 15th for a very exciting Teen Science Cafe! We will be joined by Dr. Jack Keene\, who has a long-term interest in the structure and function of viral and mammalian genomes. Having determined the first genomic sequences for rabies\, Ebola\, Marburg and vesicular stomatitis virus\, and discerned the origins of defective interfering viruses\, interests shifted to the cloning of six human genes involved in autoimmune reactivity. During this event we will be exploring studies with viruses\, autoimmunity\, and regulation of mRNAs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe western doors up the big stairs will open at 5:30 for pizza and conversation. The cafe will start at 6:00 and wrap up around 7:00. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Dr. Keene\n\n\n\nJack D. Keene is a James B. Duke Professor of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Duke University where he studies the regulation of RNA and the mechanisms of RNA-protein interactions. His work includes many accolades isolating the first human autoimmune antigen. \n\n\n\nJack’s father was a schoolteacher in mathematics who was one of the first to use computers for the military. His family moved to 10 different locations where he worked for the Air Force to set up computers. Thus\, Jack became a scientist at 9 years old because he got to see so many interesting things with his father. Biology became his love at the University of California and University of Washington and trained at the NIH for 4 years and then became a faculty member of Duke University in 1979.

SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe | Does warmer mean hungrier?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our November Teen Science Cafe! \n\n\n\nPlease join us at Morehead Planetarium on Friday\, November 17th for a very exciting Teen Science Cafe! We will be joined by Esteban Agudo\, a marine ecologist interested in how environmental characteristics (i.e. temperature\, structural complexity) affect marine communities in a time of global change. Our guiding question will be “How is climate change affecting predation in marine communities?” \n\n\n\n\nThe western doors up the big stairs will open at 5:30 for pizza and conversation. The cafe will start at 6:00 and wrap up around 7:00. \n\n\n\n\nTemperature affects every aspect of the biology of ectotherms (cold blooded animals). Through my research I study the effects of temperature changes on predation rates (e.g.\, how much an organism eats) of marine organisms including whelks\, starfish\, and reef fishes in the Galapagos Archipelago. As climate change is causing the ocean to get warmer\, we need to know how temperature affects the interactions between species to better predict the future of marine communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Esteban: \n\n\n\nI was born in Caracas\, Venezuela. While I was an undergrad majoring in Biology\, I learned to scuba dive and found I could combine my passion for science and my passion for the ocean into a career. After finishing my undergrad\, I went into graduate school and did my master also in my home country\, studying the importance of corals as provider of shelter for reef fishes. Afterward I worked as lab manager in the same lab for a couple of years\, where I spend most of my time traveling across the Venezuelan coast and islands studying the health status of coral reefs and helping students to develop their own projects. In 2019 I moved to North Carolina to start my PhD at UNC in the Bruno Lab where I had been studying the effect of temperature on interactions between species on reefs in the Galapagos. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgram Schedule\n\n\n\n5:30 pm – Arrive and check in. Presentations will take place at the Full Dome Theater. \n\n\n\n*Please Note: Depending on scheduled activities\, the program may end between 7:00 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.

SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe | Decoding the Structure of Birdsong
DESCRIPTION:Teen Science Cafe is for you! This program is just for young adults\, ages 13-18\, and it’s free! \n\n\n\nBirdsong is a unique form of animal communication\, as it faces evolutionary pressures from mate selection and social learning\, and it possesses a vast amount of diversity. There is still much left to understand about how this variation arises and its relevance in interactions between individuals of the same species. \n\n\n\nThis talk will examine an element of birdsong that has remained relatively enigmatic to researchers: syntax\, or the sequence of notes within a song. By exposing wild male songbirds to songs with familiar and scrambled syntax\, we can continue to decipher how information is conveyed in animal communication systems.  \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Speaker: \n\n\n\nEmma Reinhardt is a graduate student in the Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She joined Dr. Keith Sockman’s lab after graduating with a BS in biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2020. Emma has worked with a variety of organisms\, ranging from yeast to lizards to crabs\, before landing on songbirds. SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe | Finding the Fountain of Youth in Space
DESCRIPTION:Investigating the Role of Stem Cells in Spaceflight Telomere Elongation \n\n\n\nUp in space\, astronauts experience physiological changes reminiscent of aging such as muscle atrophy\, loss of bone density\, and stiffened arteries. However\, they have been found to develop “longer” cellular telomeres at the same time. Because longer telomeres are linked to youth\, this suggests that spaceflight could paradoxically be the cellular “fountain of youth” for astronauts. Our speaker will discuss this perplexing phenomenon and also dive into an active research proposal that will investigate whether the process is linked to stem cells.  \n\n\n\n\n\n Pristine Onuoha \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Pristine Onuoha is a 17 year-old senior at East Chapel Hill High School who loves learning about how life works and real world applications of those questions. Pristine was named the 2022 Winner of the Genes in Space Competition for her space biology research proposal. As a result\, Pristine will be working with scientists to develop this proposal for actual implementation aboard the International Space Station in 2023!

SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe | The Role of the Gut Microbiome in Our Health and Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this Teen Science Cafe with Rachel Dumez\, doctoral candidate in the Curriculum of Genetics and Molecular Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill. Rachel will discuss the trillions of microorganisms that live on and inside our bodies\, including the community of microbes that colonize the gastrointestinal tract that are referred to as our gut microbiome. The gut microbiome plays an integral role in many aspects of our health such as how we respond to medications and even how well our brains function. Loss of the “good” bacteria from our gut microbiome has been associated with many metabolic disorders such as obesity\, diabetes\, and irritable bowel syndrome. We will explore more about the relationship we have with microbes and one way we can promote a healthy gut microbiome through the consumption of probiotics. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Rachel Dumez is a third year PhD candidate in the Curriculum of Genetics and Molecular Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill who conducts research in Dr. Rob Dowen’s lab. For her thesis project she is exploring the host metabolic response to consumption of Kombucha-associated microorganisms using a small transparent worm species called Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system.

Dr. Dickerson’s research is at the interface of neurobiology\, biomechanics\, and behavior and seeks to understand how mechanosensory input structures locomotor output. His lab studies the flight behavior of the fruit fly\, combining the powerful genetic tools available for labeling and manipulating neural circuits with cutting-edge imaging in awake\, behaving animals. This work will not only fundamentally reshape our understanding of the evolution of insect flight but will also highlight the tremendous importance of timing in the context of locomotion. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Dr. Brad Dickerson is originally from NJ. After graduating from Swarthmore College\, he worked at the Museum of Science in Boston doing live programs for a year. Brad then worked in a lab at UNC while applying to grad school. He conducted his graduate work at the University of Washington and was an NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellow and California Alliance AGEP Fellow at Caltech. After starting his lab at UNC Chapel Hill two years ago\, he will be moving to the Princeton Neuroscience Institute at Princeton University in January 2022.

SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe | Big Bang 101
DESCRIPTION:Big Bang 101: Our Evolving Universe\n\n\n\nJoin us on for the return of our in-person Teen Science Cafe on September 10 at Morehead! \n\n\n\nOur guest will be Dr. Adrienne Erickcek who will be presenting the presentation: Big Bang 101: Our Evolving Universe. \n\n\n\nNearly a hundred years ago\, Edwin Hubble announced a shocking discovery: the Universe is expanding!  The implications of this expansion are profound: not only does it tell us about the birth of the Universe\, it also indicates that 95% of the current energy in the Universe comes from unknown sources.  I will present a brief history of the Universe: how it started\, what it’s made of\, and where it’s going.  \n\n\n\nDoors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the talk will begin at 6:00 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\nCredit: NASA\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n COVID Safety Precautions \n \n Masks are required for the duration of the program. \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Dr. Adrienne Erickcek is an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UNC-Chapel Hill.  They grew up in Michigan\, and came to Chapel Hill after studying physics at Princeton University and Caltech. They love Star Wars and Star Trek\, and decided to become a physicist when they were six years old because they wanted to invent a warp engine. In the years since\, they’ve learned that warp engine design is harder than it looks\, but fortunately\, they can explore the cosmos without leaving Earth! When they’re not pondering the origins of the Universe and the nature of dark matter\, they enjoy hiking with their family\, playing the flute\, and consuming science fiction in all forms. \n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP by submitting this brief survey.\n\n\n\nRSVP

SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe | An Exploration of Different Cancer Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Dr. Tammara Watts! Dr. Watts will explore how a surgeon can approach two patients with similar cancers\, perform the same surgery\, yet the patients have two different outcomes with respect to the biology of their cancer. She’ll discuss how doctors come to understand how noncancerous cells\, like stem cells and fibroblasts\, promote cancer development\, and how they design drugs to disrupt the cross talk between these cells to improve outcomes for patients with oral cancer. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Tammara Watts is a surgeon scientist at Duke. She splits her time between seeing patients and working in her laboratory to better understand the biology of oral cancers. When she is not at work you can find her riding horses\, talking to her friends (visiting once Covid is behind us)\, and cooking and entertaining in her home. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this event is FREE but registration is required.

SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe | Answering Astronomical Questions with Python Code
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how common conjunctions like the “great conjunction” on December 21\, 2020 happen? How often is there a full moon on Halloween? Using clues in the book “The Martian” and what we know about launch opportunities to Mars\, when would Mark Whatney’s mission take place? \n\n\n\nWe’ll chat with Tony Rice for this Teen Science Cafe; in writing for WRAL on astronomy topics\, he frequently creates python scripts to answer very specific astronomy questions (like the ones above). Tony will walk us through some of the code\, and then we will live code\, test\, and get an answer to an astronomy question. \n\n\n\nALL attendees must register at the link below.
