This is a special cafe done as a part of our climate action plan that was written during the North Carolina Youth Climate Summit earlier this year. Members of our Teen Advisory Board will be returning to the Summit later this year to give an update and plan for the future.  \n\n\n\nWe will be joined by an engaging STEM professional to discuss climate change and helping young people understand what they can do. DESCRIPTION:Please join us at Morehead Planetarium on Friday\, May 17th for a very exciting Teen Science Cafe! For this month we will be joined by FIRST Robotics team Carrborobotics who has just returned from the national competition. They will be showcasing this year’s robot\, discussing the challenges they faced\, and how to get involved.  \n\n\n\n\nTheir team is completely student led and managed. We are nearly equal in our male-female ratio. Carrborobotics is a space open to all\, regardless of appearance or orientation. We aim to provide a space within STEM where underrepresented groups are able to learn and grow their skills. \n\n\n\nCarrborobotics pushes to bring out the best in our members and are constantly learning about ourselves through the construction of our robots and the friendships the team forms. Most of our team members have been in the local school system since elementary and take pride in visiting their past schools and getting younger students involved in STEM at early ages. \n\n\n\n\nThe western doors up the big stairs will open at 5:30 for pizza and conversation. DESCRIPTION:Feisty females: hyenas and lemurs and meerkats\, oh my!\n\n\n\nPlease join us at Morehead Planetarium on Friday\, April 19th for a very exciting Teen Science Cafe! For this month we will be joined by Duke University professor Dr. Christine Drea to explore species where females display physical and behavioral traits that are usually associated with males. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Drea will talk about a few special primate and carnivore species\, in which all female members display physical and behavioral traits that are typically associated with males. Despite the species’ very different lifestyles\, they share the same unusual suite of behavioral traits – including more rough-and-tumble play\, scent marking\, and aggression than males – that ultimately relate to increased female competition and contribute to making dominant females much more reproductively successful than lower females. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe western doors up the big stairs will open at 5:30 for pizza and conversation. The cafe will start at 6:00 and wrap up around 7:00. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nDr. Christine Drea is a Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology and of Biology at Duke University. Her research interests are in the mechanisms\, development\, function\, and evolution of animal social and reproductive behavior\, with a focus on exceptional mammals\, including hyenas\, lemurs\, and meerkats. The general premise driving this selection is that unusual species test our understanding of normal processes and function as ‘experiments of nature.’  \n\n\n\n\nHer team’s current work\, conducted in parts of Africa and at the Duke Lemur Center in North Carolina\, is centered on the role of androgens in female dominance and aggression\, the neuroendocrine mediators of social bonding and cooperation\, the evolution of chemical communication\, and the role of microbes in mediating animal behavior and wellbeing. A passion for wildlife and wild spaces fuels teaching\, mentoring\, and public outreach aimed at encouraging curiosity about and appreciation of the world around us\, as well as activism in support of nature conservancy. For this month we will be joined by a delegation of high school students from Japan as a part of Nagoya University MIRAI Global Science Campus program. This program is designed to develop students into truly creative researchers who will be future leaders in science and technology. Under this program\, the University will recruit students with creativity and imagination who dream of winning a Nobel Prize (in Physics\, Chemistry or Physiology/Medicine)\, and students who are highly willing and motivated to become future leaders on the world stage. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will have an exciting poster session for many of the students during the pizza social session from 5:30 – 6:00 and several more will be giving short presentations on their research projects as a part of the normal presentation time from 6:00 – 7:00. For this month we will be joined by Dr. Michael Fisher from the UNC Water Institute to dive into the topic of water quality and community science.  \n\n\n\nThe western doors up the big stairs will open at 5:30 for pizza and conversation. The cafe will start at 6:00 and wrap up around 7:00. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLead is a potent neurotoxin that harms human health with disproportionate impacts on infants\, developing fetuses\, and vulnerable populations. As lead in gasoline\, paint\, and food has been progressively brought under greater control in recent decades\, water remains an increasingly important exposure route.  \n\n\n\nThis route is particularly important in private wells in the US\, as well as in a variety of water system types in many low- and middle-income country settings worldwide. Recent work by researchers at UNC and their collaborators seeks to generate evidence to inform progress on lead-free drinking water in the US and worldwide\, in alignment with 2030 sustainable development goals. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet Our Speaker\n\n\n\nDr. Fisher develops\, evaluates\, and applies technologies and methods for addressing under-recognized health concerns in water and sanitation\, both in the US and internationally. We will be joined by Dr. Jack Keene\, who has a long-term interest in the structure and function of viral and mammalian genomes. Having determined the first genomic sequences for rabies\, Ebola\, Marburg and vesicular stomatitis virus\, and discerned the origins of defective interfering viruses\, interests shifted to the cloning of six human genes involved in autoimmune reactivity. During this event we will be exploring studies with viruses\, autoimmunity\, and regulation of mRNAs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe western doors up the big stairs will open at 5:30 for pizza and conversation. The cafe will start at 6:00 and wrap up around 7:00. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Dr. Keene\n\n\n\nJack D. Keene is a James B. Duke Professor of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Duke University where he studies the regulation of RNA and the mechanisms of RNA-protein interactions. His work includes many accolades isolating the first human autoimmune antigen.  \n\n\n\nJack’s father was a schoolteacher in mathematics who was one of the first to use computers for the military. His family moved to 10 different locations where he worked for the Air Force to set up computers. Thus\, Jack became a scientist at 9 years old because he got to see so many interesting things with his father. SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe | Does warmer mean hungrier?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our November Teen Science Cafe! \n\n\n\nPlease join us at Morehead Planetarium on Friday\, November 17th for a very exciting Teen Science Cafe! We will be joined by Esteban Agudo\, a marine ecologist interested in how environmental characteristics (i.e. temperature\, structural complexity) affect marine communities in a time of global change. Our guiding question will be “How is climate change affecting predation in marine communities?” \n\n\n\n\nThe western doors up the big stairs will open at 5:30 for pizza and conversation. The cafe will start at 6:00 and wrap up around 7:00. \n\n\n\n\nTemperature affects every aspect of the biology of ectotherms (cold blooded animals). Through my research I study the effects of temperature changes on predation rates (e.g.\, how much an organism eats) of marine organisms including whelks\, starfish\, and reef fishes in the Galapagos Archipelago. As climate change is causing the ocean to get warmer\, we need to know how temperature affects the interactions between species to better predict the future of marine communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Esteban: \n\n\n\nI was born in Caracas\, Venezuela. While I was an undergrad majoring in Biology\, I learned to scuba dive and found I could combine my passion for science and my passion for the ocean into a career. After finishing my undergrad\, I went into graduate school and did my master also in my home country\, studying the importance of corals as provider of shelter for reef fishes. Afterward I worked as lab manager in the same lab for a couple of years\, where I spend most of my time traveling across the Venezuelan coast and islands studying the health status of coral reefs and helping students to develop their own projects. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our May Teen Science Cafe where we will talk about FIRST Robotics as an organization\, our guest’s most recent robot\, and how they function as a team and meet their goals each year. \n\n\n\n\nThe Titanium Tigers is a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team hosted at Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill\, NC\, and run by its students. The group is made up of many bright students including Eera S.\, Kira M.\, Logan F.\, Avani H.\, Jasper E.\, Andrew C.\, Jack E.\, and Matthew M. \n\n\n\n\nThe team participates in the annual robotics competitions hosted by an organization called FIRST. They must build a new robot each year to meet the unique challenges of the annual game. Last year they won their first district event\, were state finalists in the state championship\, and attended the FIRST (world) Championship–all firsts in the team’s 10-year history. \n\n\n\n\nTheir mission is to enrich STEM education in their school and greater community. DESCRIPTION:Teen Science Cafe is for you! This program is just for young adults\, ages 13-18\, and it’s free!  \n\n\n\nBirdsong is a unique form of animal communication\, as it faces evolutionary pressures from mate selection and social learning\, and it possesses a vast amount of diversity. There is still much left to understand about how this variation arises and its relevance in interactions between individuals of the same species.  \n\n\n\nThis talk will examine an element of birdsong that has remained relatively enigmatic to researchers: syntax\, or the sequence of notes within a song. By exposing wild male songbirds to songs with familiar and scrambled syntax\, we can continue to decipher how information is conveyed in animal communication systems.  \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Speaker: \n\n\n\nEmma Reinhardt is a graduate student in the Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She joined Dr. Keith Sockman’s lab after graduating with a BS in biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2020. Emma has worked with a variety of organisms\, ranging from yeast to lizards to crabs\, before landing on songbirds. She spends the bulk of her time teaching folks how to protect local waterways from pollution. Prior to pivoting into non-formal education\, Sammy taught 6th grade Language Arts and Social Studies in Warren County\, North Carolina. Sammy has a bachelor’s degree in communications and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. If you ask her about creek critters\, rock climbing\, or hotdog toppings\, she will get very excited. \n\n\n\nHeather Holley is an avid outdoors and nature lover with over 25 years in environmental and arboricultural experience in the private and public sectors. Fox is a graduate student in the Clinical Psychology PhD program at UNC Chapel Hill\, working with Dr. Mitch Prinstein. Subsequently\, as a research assistant at Alpert Medical School of Brown University\, she worked on several studies examining mental health and treatment access among youth in the juvenile justice system. She is interested in the role of digital social norms and processes in development and health among adolescents and young adults. In addition to research\, Kara loves teaching\, working with children and families\, and writing. In her free time\, Kara enjoys knitting and crocheting\, reading\, and playing with her dog Laika. \n\n\n\nMaria T Maza is a graduate student in the Developmental Psychology program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As the lead beekeeper at Buddha Bee Apiary\, he aims to build a program focused on sustainability and regenerative practices. Strong genetics from locally raised queens is a key interest of his\, as well as educating the public on how to be better stewards of their environment.  \n\n\n\nCome learn about the incredible biology of bees\, why they are so important to our environment\, and how to take care of them. Budda Bee Apiary cares for beehives in backyards across Raleigh\, Durham\, Cary\, Chapel Hill and beyond. They do this through our Host-a-Hive program\, mentorship program for existing beekeepers\, and educational content.  \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: Jackson Brinkley stumbled into beekeeping when a friend asked if he wanted to help install some bees into a hive. Six years later\, he is the lead beekeeper for Buddha Bee Apiary managing over 140 colonies around the Triangle.

SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe: From the Rainforest to the UN: How Science Informs Climate Change Policy
DESCRIPTION:Professor Angel Hsu found herself in the lowland jungles of Costa Rica while studying abroad the summer after her freshman year at Wake Forest University\, experiencing the beauty of glass tree frogs and sound of howler monkeys\, but wondering\, “What good is the science I’m discovering\, if global warming and deforestation eventually lead to the demise of the rain forest?” This question motivated her to study climate change policy when she returned to the classroom. In this interactive talk\, Prof. Hsu will talk about how science informs policy\, drawing on her experience at the frontlines of international climate change policy. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: Angel Hsu is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy and the Environment\, Ecology and Energy Program at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She is the Founder and Principal Investigator of Data-Driven EnviroLab\, an interdisciplinary group that uses emerging technologies and data-driven approaches to solve problems related to climate change policy. Angel previously held appointments at Yale-NUS college in Singapore as Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies and was also the lead author of the 2018 UNEP Emissions Gap report chapter on non-state actors and an author for the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report. Angel holds a PhD in Forestry and Environmental Studies from Yale University\, an M Phil in Environmental Policy from the University of Cambridge\, and a BS in Biology and BA in Political Science from Wake Forest University.

SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe | Back to the Geosphere: Impacts of CO2 Sequestration Underground
DESCRIPTION:Geological carbon sequestration involves capturing atmospheric CO2\, condensing it into liquid form\, and pumping it into deep underground aquifers.  Scientists have been exploring the environmental impacts of carbon sequestration\, including changes to groundwater geochemistry\, subsurface microbial community composition\, and the potential for fracturing and escape of CO2 back into the atmosphere.  I’ll give an overview of these impacts and share data illustrating the impact of high CO2 concentrations on subsurface microbial communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Megan Plenge is a Teaching Associate Professor in the Department of Earth\, Marine and Environmental Sciences at UNC-Chapel Hill.  Her dissertation research focused on microbial controls on water chemistry. She is currently involved with the National Association of Geoscience Teacher (NAGT) as the North Carolina representative to the South East section\, and as a program chair for their national conference\, the Earth Educator Rendezvous.

SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe | Finding the Fountain of Youth in Space
DESCRIPTION:Investigating the Role of Stem Cells in Spaceflight Telomere Elongation \n\n\n\nUp in space\, astronauts experience physiological changes reminiscent of aging such as muscle atrophy\, loss of bone density\, and stiffened arteries. However\, they have been found to develop “longer” cellular telomeres at the same time. Because longer telomeres are linked to youth\, this suggests that spaceflight could paradoxically be the cellular “fountain of youth” for astronauts. Our speaker will discuss this perplexing phenomenon and also dive into an active research proposal that will investigate whether the process is linked to stem cells.  \n\n\n\n\n\n Pristine Onuoha \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Pristine Onuoha is a 17 year-old senior at East Chapel Hill High School who loves learning about how life works and real world applications of those questions. Pristine was named the 2022 Winner of the Genes in Space Competition for her space biology research proposal. As a result\, Pristine will be working with scientists to develop this proposal for actual implementation aboard the International Space Station in 2023!

In this program\, you’ll discover how light pollution affects our view of the night sky\, find out how to participate in a worldwide citizen-science campaign to document light pollution\, and try your hand at designing better streetlights that put light only where it’s needed. Under the planetarium dome\, you’ll experience a stunning night sky studded with stars\, just as our ancestors did—and as we could too\, if we reduced light pollution. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Amy Sayle\, PhD\, communicates astronomy to the public and tells stories about the stars under the Morehead Planetarium sky\, at skywatching events\, on night paddles at Jordan Lake\, and under dark skies at Bryce Canyon National Park’s annual astronomy festival. She is a founder and coordinator of the North Carolina Science Festival’s annual Statewide Star Party\, which features dozens of skywatching events from the NC mountains to the coast on the same weekend in April.    \n\n\n\nAbout Teen Science Cafe: Teen Science Cafe is a monthly event\, inviting teens to talk directly with scientists about their work. Designed specifically for ages 13-18\, we invite guests to ask questions and participate in interesting discussions.
