DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the lunar eclipse with Morehead’s astronomy educators!\n\n\n\nOn Thursday\, August 27\, celebrate the partial lunar eclipse with a special evening at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center! Under the climate-controlled\, always-clear planetarium sky\, we’ll simulate the eclipse\, tour the North Carolina night sky\, and take a spectacular journey through our universe. If the weather permits\, join us after the show for eclipse observing from the Morehead Sundial.  \n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n\n9:30 – 10:30 PM | Carolina Skies: Lunar Eclipse show \n\n\n\n10:30 PM – 12:30 AM | Free skywatching (weather permitting) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets for Carolina Skies: Lunar Eclipse are available starting on Monday\, July 27. UNC-Chapel Hill students can enjoy $6 tickets to the planetarium show. Log in to Heel Life to receive your student discount code! \n\n\n\n\nCarolina Skies tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore You Go: Helpful Tips & Important Details\n\n\n\nTo make the most of your evening under the stars\, we suggest bringing a cozy blanket or some chairs. For everyone’s safety and enjoyment\, we kindly ask that you leave your pets at home\, even if they’re on a leash. The combination of darkness\, crowds\, expensive telescopes\, and pets isn’t ideal\, and pets won’t be allowed near the telescopes. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this event is weather-dependent. In the event of a cancellation\, we will provide updates on our website and social media. We can’t wait to share the wonders of the night sky with you! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHave more questions about skywatching? Visit our FAQs page! \n\n\n\n\nSkywatching FAQs

SUMMARY:Carolina Science Cafe: Who’s a Journalist in the Age of AI?
DESCRIPTION:Who’s a Journalist in the Age of AI? \n\n\n\nTheorizing Distributed Journalistic Authority Amid Newsfluencers\, Algorithms\, and Generative Systems \n\n\n\nWho’s a Journalist in the Age of AI? addresses a critical development in the news media. In this talk\, UNC-Chapel Hill’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media faculty member\, Deb Aikat\, PhD\, will discuss how generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) reconfigures the epistemic boundaries of journalistic authority\, credibility\, and public verification in democratic discourse.  \n\n\n\nDr. Aikat will discuss how AI is reshaping press freedom at a time when public trust in media has sunk to 28%\, according to Gallup’s 2025 survey. He studies the shifting information landscape in the U.S. and India — the world’s oldest and largest democracies — tracing how digital platforms empower people to publish\, protest\, and participate in civic life beyond traditional newsrooms. \n\n\n\n\n\nDesigned for adults\, Carolina Science Cafe is a free program that explores science topics making national and international headlines\, offering the chance to meet the experts behind the work. This special program is hosted at Haw River Tap & Table in Carrboro on the first Tuesday of every month. Light appetizers are available for all attendees. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Deb Aikat is a professor in the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media. \n\n\n\nA former journalist\, Deb Aikat (pronounced EYE-cut)\, is a tenured full professor in the UNC-Chapel Hill Hussman School of Journalism and Media who is reimagining the future of a free press in the age of AI. \n\n\n\nAikat theorizes how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the free press as a democratic institution. When Deb arrived at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1995\, the internet was still new terrain. He launched the journalism school’s first online course and helped build what would become the university’s online master’s program in digital communication. Three decades later\, he’s studying one of the biggest transformations to ever face the news industry: generative AI.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about Dr. Aikat\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarolina Science Cafe is produced by Morehead Planetarium and Science Center and sponsored by the UNC Chapter of Sigma Xi.

SUMMARY:Carolina Science Cafe: The Mathematics of Thin Materials
DESCRIPTION:From pizza to plant leaves: The mathematics of thin materials \n\n\n\nWhy do plant leaves curl as they grow or dry out? Why do you fold a slice of pizza when picking it up? How can inflatable structures support heavy loads? At December’s Carolina Science Café\, Dr. Thomas Chandler will explore these questions through the lens of applied mathematics. He will introduce the mechanics of thin elastic materials\, showing how geometry and the competition between bending and stretching govern their behavior. From Gauss’s remarkable theorem to the design of soft robots\, he will demonstrate how these mathematical ideas help us understand biological structures and inspire new technologies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nOriginally from England\, Thomas Chandler received his PhD from the University of Oxford\, UK\, in 2021\, before becoming a Van Vleck Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison\, WI\, from 2021 to 2025. In 2025\, he joined UNC–Chapel Hill as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics\, where he teaches and conducts research in the Applied Mathematics group. His research focuses on modelling fluids and elastic materials found in a range of biological systems\, from the complex fluids within cells to the mechanics of plant leaves. \n\n\n\n\nMore about Dr. Chandler\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarolina Science Cafe is produced by Morehead Planetarium and Science Center and sponsored by the UNC Chapter of Sigma Xi.
