Credit: Associated Press\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022\, Vladimir Putin’s government had already been designated as authoritarian. Since then\, Russia has seen changes in its laws\, more repression\, and a growing acceptance of these harsh measures. As a result\, Russians now find it nearly impossible to publicly oppose their government. This talk will examine the political shifts that have occurred in Russia since the war in Ukraine started. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\n\nSasha de Vogel is a post-doctoral fellow and associate director of the Authoritarian Politics Lab at UNC Chapel Hill. Her research addresses how authoritarian regimes manage their publics\, in particular how they prevent or respond to protest\, with a regional focus on Russia. Her scholarship has appeared in Conflict Management and Peace Studies\, Democratization and Post-Soviet Affairs. She has a PhD in political science from the University of Michigan and previously held post-doctoral fellowships at New York University and Harvard University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More\n\n\n\n\nDr. Vogel’s Website\n\n\n\nUNC Authoritarian Politics Lab
