Nobel Laureate Dr. Oliver Smithies

Dr. Oliver Smithies, co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, will speak on “Reflections of a Lifetime of Science” at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center on Wednesday, April 9 2008. Smithies, who is an Excellence Professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, has been a UNC faculty member since 1988.

NCBC awards grant to MPSC

The N.C. Biotechnology Center has awarded a $48,770 grant to Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to support the Destiny traveling science learning program. The grant will be used for the development and implementation of “Creating a Chain Reaction,” a new curriculum module from Destiny, the planetarium’s science education outreach initiative.

Thanking our donors ...

Through the generosity of donors who support Morehead Planetarium and Science Center's mission, MPSC exceeded its donation goals in 2007 nearly two-fold.

This reflects the success of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's "Carolina First" fundraising campaign, which exceeded its campaign goal with a total of $2.38 billion in donations.

MPSC received $5.8 million in donations during the campaign, which was 195 percent of its $3 million campaign goal. Contributions came from members, corporations, foundations and other donors.

New director of outreach programs

CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Morehead Planetarium and Science Center has appointed Crystal Harden as their director of outreach programs.

Her appointment is effective February 4, 2008.

Harden comes to MPSC with a wide range of experience in formal and informal science education and most recently served as the education programs consultant for the California Department of Education.

A Congressman's Date with DESTINY

DESTINY welcomed a special guest on board one of their traveling science laboratories during a visit to South Granville High School of Engineering and Applied Studies on Nov. 20.

With MPSC director Todd Boyette as his lab partner, Rep. Brad Miller (NC-13) worked alongside a group of 10th Grade students from one of Deborah Gaul’s honors biology classes and performed a DESTINY lab exercise called “Get a Clue.”

Leadership at the World Special Olympics

MPSC multimedia designer Jay Heinz recently returned from a one-of-a-kind trip to China, where he helped provide news coverage of the Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai.

Heinz, along with six other journalists and media professionals from organizations such as The Washington Post and The News & Observer, acted as an adviser for a team of 18 UNC-Chapel Hill journalism students and faculty during the games in China, which were held Oct. 2 through Oct. 11.

NSF awards more than half-million dollars to Morehead Planetarium

The National Science Foundation has awarded a $570,487 grant to Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The grant will support the center’s Science 360 educational program.

"Full Frame" welcomes MPSC

MPSC Director Todd Boyette will speak on Saturday, April 14, as part of the Full Frame documentary film festival in Durham.

Boyette's presentation will follow a screening of "In The Shadow of the Moon," a film by David Sington that explores the lives of the 12 men who walked on the Moon.
