A Congressman's Date with DESTINYposted Tuesday November 27, 2007
DESTINY welcomed a special guest on board one of their traveling science laboratories during a visit to South Granville High School of Engineering and Applied Studies on Nov. 20.
With MPSC director Todd Boyette as his lab partner, Rep. Brad Miller (NC-13) worked alongside a group of 10th Grade students from one of Deborah Gaul’s honors biology classes and performed a DESTINY lab exercise called “Get a Clue.”
Miller, Boyette and the students assumed the role of forensic scientists and performed DNA restriction analysis (popularly known as DNA fingerprinting) to analyze drops of "blood" and other kinds of evidence found at crime scenes as they determine which suspects are guilty or innocent.
Rep. Miller witnessed an example of the positive impact that MPSC’s DESTINY program has had on students and teachers in his district and across North Carolina.
