We spent Thursday on a trip out to the Haw River, west of Chapel Hill. We were able to do a macroinvertebrate study just below a dam to investigate what was living in the river, and what we could learn about stream health.
In the afternoon we canoed out onto the lake just above [...]
Today we started off by going to the creek and collecting data, since i am a great observer i found out that it was raining or close to it. Today the air pressure actually changed, but the computer was having trouble so I didn’t get the temperature of the water.
Then we went to the Haw [...]
Today, first, we went to take our daily stream measurements. Then we drove in vans to the Haw River. We headed to the shallow end near the dam and we caught organisms, like little cute frogs, leeches, snails, mollusks, and larvae. We even found a fish named Preston Jeffery (P.J.). We also found a algae [...]
Today we hurriedly took our measurements and took a trip to the Haw river. Aidan and Ryan were catching mini frogs while the rest of us were catching algae and leeches. We forgot the backpack, so the species identification keys were left at the school. The quality of the water was in between, because [...]
Today started out as usual: we went to the stream and took our tests as usual.
Then we went to the Haw river and collected specimens to determine how healthy the river was and it turned out that the river was moderately healthy because fish live in it which indicate good water quality and there were [...]
Today we went down to the stream and checked the water level which was really low,we also checked the air pressure and it was 71.1. Even though it rained the stream was very low, it wasn’t even moving and there wasn’t enough water to move. Hopefully today’s rain will help out with this drought!
Next, [...]
In the morning we ran down to the stream and took our stream samples. We couldn’t find any organisms today. Then we came in and wrote yesterday’s blog post. We learned how to use a GPS and then went geo caching. The prize was half of a water gun, which was [...]
Today we went down to the stream to check on the weir, but the stream was dry and the water wasn’t running at all. We used some special sensors to measure the pH (acidity) and the oxygen content of the water. We also learned about how GPS navigation works and used it outside to find [...]
We are the physical team Sarah, Hope, Janine, and Chase. Today we checked the weir and measured the flow rate, turbidity and depth. We recorded the changes and came back to the room and learn about GPS. We made a map on the GPS and hid a item at the end. Then we came [...]
Here are some great shot of our camp scientists in action! Building cardboard boats (they’d better float), and filtering some VERY gross water! Do we have any future OWASA chemists in our midst?
